We Love Spring – But Beware of Poisonous Plants for Cats!

Spring flowers bring a welcome burst of colour into our homes at Easter. But they can also bring danger to our cats, especially inquisitive kittens. Here are poisonous plants for cats you need to keep away so your home stays feline-friendly!

What plants are poisonous for cats?

So, which plants are toxic for cats? Currently the UK does not include cat care labelling to show which flowers and pot plants are poisonous plants for cats at home. However, The Pet Poison Helpline has a Top 10 Plants Poisonous to Pets, and the ASPCA has an extensive list of Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants. These include Easter favourites such as Tulips, Daffodils, Lilies and Crocus.

A list of plants you should avoid if you own a cat

Cat poisoned symptoms are often hard to tell, and can be mistaken for being shy or withdrawn. But look out for these common warning signs.

Symptoms of cat poisoning:

  • Increased Thirst
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Confused / Uncoordinated
  • Fitting / Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite

What to do if you think your cat has eaten a poisonous plant

Do:

  • Take them to the vet immediately
  • Give your vet information about what they have eaten, take the plant with you if possible
  • Keep other pets away from the source

Don’t:

  • Wait for symptoms or assume they will go away
  • Try to make your cat vomit or feed them salt water
  • Panic!
